After a few troubles that arised earlier this month, we finally managed to run the engine again. Gosh! I’m becoming an expert!<\/p>\n
We decided to have a trial trip this month, next week, if weather allows it. It has been raining almost every single day and wind is not exactly favourable for sailing lately, but forecast says next week will be much better. So, we decided to spend three days at sea, sleeping at anchor, and test the sailboat.<\/p>\n
We are taking a skipper with us. I do not feel comfortable with only two people on board, especially if we have to keep watch during the night. Ximena is coming with me. She managed to free her schedule at the music school for those days.<\/p>\n

After a few sea trials, I still feel nervous. It will be the first time we will sleep at anchor, and there are a lot of things I have to think about to get ready: fuel, provisions, emergency kit, radio, sailing permits, and more… Did I mention the sailing plan?? No, I didn’t, because I still don’t have it. I am used to read nautical charts in my job as a marine biologist onboard research vessels, but this time I am totally freaking out every time I look at the chart!<\/p>\n
I have pretty clear in my mind what are we going to do, but for some reason, I can’t write it down, and even less draw the navigation route on the chart. My head is spinning around other things: who is going to sleep where? How much food will be needed? Should I take extra water just in case? What will be on the menu? What if they don’t like it? Are we going to cook onboard or have previously prepared meals? When was last time I checked the expiration date of fire extinguishers? What if the engine fails?<\/p>\n
COVID prevention measures will have to be implemented, and that poses an additional challenge in a small vessel. Thankfully, we are used to sail fully covered because of the sun, but… will it be possible to stay indoors with the mask on with the warm temperatures we have?<\/p>\n

I feel totally overwhelmed by the situation. Excited, but overwhelmed. It is the first time I will have to think not only on the science job, but also on the boat, the seamanship, the safety… it is too much for a single person in such a short time! Am I \u00abchickening<\/em>\u00bb out?<\/p>\n Rain will stop on May 15th and the wind will change back to SE again. Swell will be much better on the 17th than the 16th, and good weather will last until the 23rd. So, considering our Skipper’s availability, the trip will take place from May 17th to 19th.<\/p>\n Tomorrow I will dedicate the day to safety on board: I will inspect lifesavers, life jackets, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, radios, batteries, etc., etc., etc. That will be something less to think about.
