Our crew is down to two!

April 3rd, 2021

Usually, losing a crew member is terribly sad, but we are very happy with it, as it is for the best reason ever!

One of our teammates, Angy, is a marine mammal veterinarian. She joined the project a few months before we found the sailboat, and since that, she has been not only a great asset every time she helps us see things from a different perspective, but also a continuous burst of enthusiasm and motivation for everyone.

With the pandemic, the team had to change their working methods, just like everyone else, and our meetings were online instead of face to face with a cup of coffee. We also had to divide the tasks instead of working on them together, so I took care of the whole repair and refitting of the vessel while Ximena and Angy got the «desks», taking care of other important issues I couldn’t take on me, and they did a wonderful job!

Besides having her own business of veterinarian supplies, Angy is also a full-time mother of a lovely toddler girl who calls me «biógola» instead of «bióloga» or just Diana, inevitably making me smile every time she shows up in front of the camera to say hello to the team.  And despite being so busy, Angy always found the time to meet us and the energy to complete the tasks she was assigned to and still cheer us up and motivate to keep going when our level of enthusiasm was a little low. She was always on time for the meetings (which I can’t say about myself!) and always smiling and happy to share with us what she did during the week.

Things got difficult for her and her family and they had to move several times during the last moths, first to another city here in the state of Yucatan, but later to another state on the opposite side of the country. Despite the poor internet connection she had to struggle with at every different location, she did her best to keep meeting us every time she could.

Of course, the monotony of the restrictions imposed by the sanitary situation affected us all, and at some point, we all started missing the meetings, struggling to complete simple tasks or meeting deadlines. However, Angy always pushed us to keep moving, to even increase the frequency of the meetings (which finally wasn’t possible) and to look for better ways to work.

At some point, I started noticing she was more tired than usual, and despite her endless motivation, she was having troubles to join the meetings or meet the deadlines. Trying to address this situation before it could become a problem, a few weeks ago I asked her how was she doing with all the recent changes in her life. She told us we were going to be aunties in a few weeks!! What? Are you serious?? Suddenly, everything had much more sense now and I could not only understand better the situation, but also to admire her even more!

Obviously, it is not exactly the best moment for her to be climbing stairs and running over a sailboat deck to catch a rope! She needs now all the energy she may have and to focus on taking care of herself. Of course, we will miss her onboard this season, but we will be waiting for her for the next one, and we will keep meeting with her online once her little angel will land on this world, so we can keep sharing great moments together!

Both Ximena and myself, we wish Angy and her family a strong and healthy stamina-full baby running around the house as tirelessly as her mommy has been working for this project, and we look forward to have those two sweet dwarfs joining her mom on board very soon!

Isn’t this the best reason ever to be happy to get your crew reduced?
