Acercar el océano a la gente
El Océano es fundamental para la vida en el planeta, y hoy en día, enfrenta serias amenazas como el cambio climático, la acidificación, la contaminación y la sobrepesca, por mencionar sólo algunos problemas. Cada región tiene sus propios retos ambientales relacionados con las actividades humanas en la zona, por lo que las acciones locales para enfrentar estos retos son tan importantes como las globales. El S/V Veiviseren busca contribuir con estas acciones en el Estado de Yucatán, en México.

En Yucatán, como en muchos otros puntos del planeta, el mar juega un papel muy importante para la economía de la región, y su deterioro significa también el deterioro de la zona y de la calidad de vida de sus habitantes. No sólo se requiere de mayor información científica cada día que contribuya al mejoramiento de las políticas de manejo, sino que también se requieren más oportunidades de participación para aquellos interesados en el Océano o en contribuir a su cuidado, especialmente para los jóvenes egresados en el área marina que buscan experimentar la profesión en el mar.
Navegando para ayudar al Océano
Con un amplio programa de trabajo que incluye investigación, conservación, entrenamiento, sensibilización ambiental y más, el S/V Veiviseren tiene como objetivo acercar el Océano a la gente y servir como plataforma para investigadores, jóvenes científicos, exploradores y miembros de la comunidad para ayudarlos a conocer, entender, cuidar y conservar el Océano.
La Visión del Proyecto
Ser una plataforma de investigación, conservación y educación oceánica abierta a jóvenes científicos y miembros de la comunidad buscando una experiencia práctica guidada por científicos e investigadores.
La misión del Proyecto
Contribuir a la conservación y restauración del Océano, acercándolo a la gente para que puedan, conocerlo, sentirlo suyo e involucrarse en su protección.

This month will be a year since COVID mobility restrictions finally allowed me to go back to the sailboat. Time passed fast, a lot of things happened and I had to come up with a new plan: to go back to the original plan!

El trabajo a bordo
Investigación
Tras años de llevar a cabo proyectos de investigación en diferentes aspectos del Océano en distintos puntos del planeta, ¿Por qué no hacerlo también aquí? Oceanografía, fauna marina, impactos antropogénicos, plásticos, interacciones pesqueras, etc. Cada año se abrirá una posición de asistente de investigación a bordo dirigida a estudiantes que busquen experimentar el trabajo a bordo de primera mano. De igual manera, el velero estará disponible para ser usado por otras instituciones.
Conservación
Hay dos programas permanentes de conservación a bordo: plásticos y recuperación de redes fantasma. Además, se trabaja. demanera conjunta con las comunidades costeras del Estado de Yucatán para motivarlas a llevar a cabo sus propios proyectos de conservación en su área, apoyándolas con asesoría, conocimiento, capacitación, apropiación de técnicas y acceso a nuestra información.

Entrenamiento
Muchos jóvenes egresados interesados en trabajar a favor de la protección del ambiente marino en México no tienen acceso a oportunidades para experimentar la vida en el mar. Se busca abrir una oportunidad para ellos, permitiéndoles unirse a los proyectos del S/V Veiviseren o llevando a cabo los propios a bordo. Al unirse al velero, obtendrán experiencia práctica, guía y el entrenamiento adecuado para trabajar en el mar de manera segura mientras adquieren otras destrezas, esenciales para su trabajo.
Awareness
We conduct several activities focused on engaging people towards the ocean. We want to motivate the coastal communities of the state of Yucatan to join our conservation efforts and make them their own by bringing to them courses, workshops, lectures, conferences, festivals, expositions, and more, where the residents of those communities participate in our research and conservation projects. Of course, all those activities are open to the public!
Mentoring
This is our most recent program. We found out that there are a lot of recent graduates and young scientists in need of mentoring for their projects or thesis research, and we would like to help. By joining our mentoring program, they will get the guidance and help they need to achieve their goals. Where else you will find mentoring in three different languages: English, French and Spanish?
Our Top Priorities
We all depend on the ocean for survival, and despite it represents 70% of the Earth’s surface, less than 5% of it has been explored and less than 2% has been protected. Thus, it is our responsibility to care for it. Human activities severely impact the marine environment: overfishing, noise, shipping transit, pollution, waste disposal, oil and gas extraction, mining, oil spills, single-use plastics, ghost nets, abandoned fishing gear, floating debris… the list is extensive!
Plastics
Plastic is one of the worst ocean pollutants nowadays. Besides huge amounts of it being spilt every year into the seas and rivers, it constitutes a danger for marine fauna, from the large whales to the tiny plankton. It takes a long time to degrade and it breaks in microparticles that are then ingested by the smallest organisms, entering the food chain up to us.
Ghost nets
Abandoned and lost fishing gear pose a considerable risk for marine fauna. Some of this fishing gear gets lost during storms at sea, other drops from the vessels when they are not well secured, others are broken pieces of a whole. Every year, several dolphins, whales, sea turtles, sharks and seabirds die entangled in floating abandoned nets.
Climate
The Ocean is our primary climate regulator. By absorbing the heat from the atmosphere, it cools down the air. It also absorbs CO2, which is used to produce oxygen and clean the air. However, we are polluting so much that the Ocean is absorbing too much heat and can’t cool down the air fast enough. This provokes dominant winds to slow, which also slows down the ocean currents, interfering with nutrients, temperature and oxygen exchange within the ocean layers.
Megafauna
Marine megafauna is considered to be suitable as ocean health indicators. Due to their size and their long life span, they are suitable for long term studies, and their position, usually on the top levels of the food chain, allows them to reflect what happens with other species they interact. By studying them, useful inferences might be made about the state of health of oceans and coasts from which human communities depend, and make the right management decisions.
Pollution
Pollution of the oceans has been a significant challenge. We keep throwing all kind to waste into the sea, thinking it will disappear. Actually, we are only creating an additional problem, which is growing every day with catastrophic consequences, not only for marine life but also for ourselves. All those pollutants are being integrated into the food chain… and into all of us.
